There are 4 Soviet designed VVER-440 PWR's in operation at Dukovany operated by the State utility, Ceske Energeticke Zavody (CEZ) and 2 VVER-1000 units at Temelin, near Ceske Budejovice in Western Bohemia.
A facility for disposal of LLW and short-lived ILW arising from all power plants in the Czech Republic has been built adjacent to the Dukovany NPP......
HLW/Spent Fuel
Prior to the split of the former Czechoslovakia, spent fuel from Dukovany was sent for storage to Bohunice in Slovakia, but this is now no longer possible and it was decided to build on-site spent fuel stores. A facility is operational at Dukovany and an extension is under construction......
In 1993, a "Program for Setting Up of Deep Geological Repository" was established, which included the national policy on deep disposal for ILW and HLW.
RAWRA took over all responsibility for the siting process from the Nuclear Research Institute in Rez. It was mandated under the 1997 Law to produce a draft disposal concept by 31 May 1999. This was submitted to government in early 2000 and approved in 2002....
