The first PWR in Western Europe was commissioned at Mol in 1962. There are now 7 PWR units in Belgium, 4 at Doel, on the Scheldt River, 10 km north of Antwerp, and 3 in Tihange, on the Meuse River.
A new Law was passed in January 2003 to phase out nuclear power by the end of the current reactor licences, expected to be in around 40 years. However, following elections in June 2007, it is unclear whether such action will be taken........
Efforts have been underway since 1999 to identify a potential repository site for A and B wastes at one of the existing nuclear facilities, using an innovative methodology involving 3 local partnerships between ONDRAF/NIRAS and the local community. Each of these partnerships operated their own websites, MONA (Mol), STOLA (Dessel) and PaLoFF (Fleurus and Farcienne)......
The HADES URL has been operating at Mol since 1984, examining the suitability of the Boom Clay as a host for a repository for B and C wastes.
Belgian spent fuel is currently reprocessed by COGEMA at La Hague in France, and around 15 shipments of HLW will be required, of which 7 have so far been completed.....
